What county is Plano, TX in? Collin County, a Denton County edge, and where Plano sits

Key takeaway

Plano is in Collin County, Texas, with a small far-west part in Denton County: the Census Bureau lists the city in both. It sits on US-75 about 15 miles north of Dallas, and the straight-line distance between the two cities' Census center points is 17.8 miles. If a house is on the Denton County side, the appraisal district, the tax office and often the electricity company and school district change with it.

What county is Plano, Texas in?

Treat Plano as a Collin County city with one exception you need to check on any west-side listing. The Texas State Historical Association places it in southwestern Collin County, and almost all of its 71.7 square miles of land are on the Collin side. The Census Bureau's 2020 place-by-county file lists Plano in two counties, Collin and Denton, so the full answer has a footnote: a small strip at the far west edge of the city is in Denton County.

The Collin County side of Plano

East Plano, central Plano, downtown, Legacy and most of west Plano are in Collin County. Those addresses are appraised by the Collin Central Appraisal District, register cars with the Collin County Tax Assessor-Collector, and pay Collin County's property tax along with the City of Plano's.

The Denton County side of Plano

The Denton County part sits at the far west of the city. The Census Bureau's ZIP-to-county files show only two Plano ZIPs crossing into Denton County: 75024, with 1.62 square miles of its land there, and 75093, with 1.40 square miles. Those figures cover each ZIP's whole area, which includes land outside Plano, so the Denton County part of the city itself is smaller still.

Kings Ridge: a Plano neighborhood in Denton County

Kings Ridge is the best-known example. The neighborhood is inside Plano's city limits but on the Denton County side, so it's appraised by Denton Central Appraisal District, and its HOA lists CoServ for electricity and gas and Lewisville ISD for schools. Our Kings Ridge neighborhood guide covers the homes and prices.

What changes on the Denton County side of Plano

Your city services stay the same on both sides: the City of Plano still runs water, trash, police and fire. Four things change with the county.

Collin CAD vs Denton CAD for Plano property values

The appraisal district sets your taxable value, takes your homestead filing and hears your protest. Collin County addresses deal with Collin Central Appraisal District, and Denton County addresses with Denton Central Appraisal District. Each has its own deadlines calendar and online search, so file with the right one. Rates by taxing unit for both sides are on our Plano property tax rates page.

Collin County or Denton County tax office for your car

Vehicle registration goes through the tax assessor-collector of the county you live in. Both counties are on Texas's list of emissions-testing counties, so the inspection rule doesn't change across the line. The steps are on our guide to the Plano DMV and car registration.

Oncor or CoServ: Plano electricity across the county line

Most of Plano is in Oncor's delivery area, where you choose a retail electricity plan. Some far-west addresses are in CoServ's territory instead; CoServ is a member-owned cooperative, and its members don't shop for a retail provider.

School districts across Plano's county line

School district lines don't follow county lines. Most Plano addresses are in Plano ISD, and parts of the city are in Frisco ISD or Lewisville ISD. Check every address with the district's own school finder; our guide to the school districts serving Plano links each one.

Collin County or Denton County voter registration

Voter registration in Texas is county-based, so a Denton County Plano address registers with the Denton County voter registrar, and your ballot includes Denton County races as well as Plano's.

Plano ZIP codes by county

Here's how the Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP code tabulation areas split between the two counties for Plano's main ZIPs. ZIP 75094 is mostly outside Plano, in Murphy and Parker.

Which county is Plano 75024 in?

Mostly Collin County: 87.5% of the 75024 ZIP's land is in Collin and 12.5% in Denton, on its western edge. 75093 splits the same way, about nine to one. Every other Plano ZIP is entirely in Collin County. Home values by ZIP are on our Plano ZIP codes page.

The Texas State Historical Association puts Plano about 15 miles north of Dallas on US-75, and 17.8 miles separate the two cities' Census center points. By train, DART's October 2026 schedule shows the Red Line taking 42 minutes from Parker Road Station in Plano to Akard Station in downtown Dallas. Fort Worth is 39.5 miles from Plano in a straight line, on the far side of DFW Airport. DART's Silver Line, open since October 25, 2025, runs from Plano to DFW Airport's Terminal B, where Trinity Metro's TEXRail continues toward Fort Worth.

Distance from Plano to Austin, Houston and San Antonio

Austin is 199.1 straight-line miles away, Houston 239.4 and San Antonio 269.2. If your job or family is in one of those cities, a trip there is a flight or a day's drive, so DFW Airport and Love Field access matters more than it looks.

Highways and rail lines through Plano

US-75 (Central Expressway) runs north to south through the city, which is how the TSHA locates it. The Dallas North Tollway, SH-121 and the President George Bush Turnpike serve the west and south sides. DART rail stops at Parker Road, Downtown Plano and 12th Street stations, and the Silver Line adds Shiloh Road Station.

Is Plano in Dallas County, or part of Dallas?

No on both counts. It's its own incorporated city, with its own city council, utilities and police department, and it isn't in Dallas County. The City of Dallas reaches the southern edge of Plano, and a few Dallas ZIP codes clip the Plano city line, but the two cities don't overlap.

Is Plano a suburb of Dallas?

Plano is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro and is often called a Dallas suburb, and it has corporate campuses of its own around Legacy, so check where your job is before assuming the commute runs south. If you're choosing among suburbs, our comparison of Dallas suburbs lines them up.

Plano vs Dallas home values

Zillow's typical home value in September 2026 was $497,714 in Plano and $303,442 in the City of Dallas, so the typical Plano home costs about 64% more. Dallas covers a much wider range of housing, and Plano's own range runs from about $234,000 in Douglass to $1.6 million in Shoal Creek, by Zillow's neighborhood values. The table above compares Plano with its neighbors.

Plano and Collin County: size and history

How Plano, Texas got its name

Plano grew up on land settled in the 1840s and 1850s and got a post office in 1852. The TSHA says the name, Spanish for flat, was suggested by Dr. Henry Dye as a description of the surrounding prairie. The Houston and Texas Central Railway reached it in 1872, and the town was platted and incorporated in 1873.

From farm town to city: how Plano grew

Plano had 3,695 residents in 1960 and 222,030 by 2000, per the TSHA, more than sixtyfold in 40 years. Most of the city you'll tour was built after 1960.

Land area of Plano vs Frisco and Richardson

The Census Bureau measures Plano at 71.7 square miles of land and 0.36 square miles of water. For comparison, Frisco is 68.6 square miles and Richardson 28.6.

Plano's neighboring cities in Collin, Denton and Dallas County

The price gap across a city line can be bigger than the gap inside Plano, so if west Plano is over budget, the next city over is a real option. Zillow's September 2026 typical values set up the choice; the table above has the rest.

Richardson, south of Plano

The pick if you want rail without Plano's prices. Richardson's typical value was $437,432, and the Red, Orange and Silver lines all stop at its CityLine/Bush Station. The catch: it was one of the few nearby cities where values rose over the year (0.65%), so there's less of a discount to negotiate, and it spans Dallas and Collin counties, so check the county for each address.

Frisco, northwest of Plano

Frisco is the step up: $640,131, about 29% above Plano's $497,714, 8.4 miles from Plano's center point. Like Plano it spans Collin and Denton counties, so the same county check applies. Our Plano and Frisco comparison sets the two side by side.

Allen and McKinney, north of Plano in Collin County

Both price close to Plano (Allen $487,619, McKinney $472,867) and both fell about 5% over the year, a bigger drop than Plano's 3.33%, which gives a buyer a little more room there. The catch is distance from Dallas: McKinney is 11.5 miles beyond Plano's center point. It's also where TxDMV lists Collin County's tax office, at 2300 Bloomdale Road.

Murphy and Carrollton, east and west of Plano

Carrollton is the budget move, at $396,178, about $100,000 under Plano's typical value. The catch is that it spans Dallas, Denton and Collin counties, so the county, the tax office and the school district all need checking address by address. Murphy, on Plano's east side, runs higher at $579,553 and covers most of ZIP 75094, which is why a 75094 address is more likely Murphy or Parker than Plano.

How to check which county a Plano address is in

A listing's ZIP or the city name won't settle it. Use this check on any west Plano house before you make an offer:

  1. Search the address on Collin Central Appraisal District's property search. If it isn't there, search Denton Central Appraisal District.
  2. Read the taxing units on the appraisal record: a Denton County home lists Denton County among them.
  3. Run the address on Power to Choose. If no electricity plans show up, the house is likely in a co-op area such as CoServ's.
  4. Check the school district with that district's own school finder.

Linda can pull the appraisal record for any Plano house you're considering and show you which side of the line it's on.
