The sales tax in Plano is 8.25%: 6.25% to the State of Texas, 1% to the City of Plano and 1% to DART. That's the highest rate Texas allows and the same as Frisco, Allen and Dallas. Texas has no state income tax, and cars carry their own 6.25% tax, or $90 if you bring one you already own.
You're moving to Plano and want to know the sales tax rate, how it compares with the rest of Texas, what Texas taxes instead of income, and what you'll owe on your car.

Plano sales tax rate in 2026: 8.25%
Plano's sales tax is 8.25%, the most Texas law allows, and for choosing where to live you can stop there: Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Richardson and Dallas charge the same, so it won't separate one city from another. The Comptroller's city rate list shows the split:
| Part of the Plano sales tax | Rate | Goes to |
|---|---|---|
| Texas state sales tax | 6.25% | State of Texas |
| City of Plano sales tax | 1.00% | City of Plano (local code 2043018) |
| Dallas MTA transit sales tax | 1.00% | DART |
| Total | 8.25% |
Plano sales tax in Collin and Denton counties
The rate is the same in the Collin County and Denton County parts of the city. The Comptroller lists Plano under both counties with the same local code, the same 1% city rate, the same 1% DART rate and the same 8.25% total. A purchase in a far-west Plano shop is taxed exactly like one at Legacy West.
DART sales tax in Plano
One of Plano's two local pennies goes to Dallas Area Rapid Transit, so every taxable purchase helps pay for the Red, Orange and Silver lines that stop in Plano; the routes and stations are on the Plano to Dallas commute guide.
Sales tax on a Plano purchase
On a $2,000 refrigerator you pay $165 in sales tax: $125 to the state, $20 to the City of Plano and $20 to DART. The state rate applies to most retail sales, leases and rentals of goods and some services; the Comptroller's taxable services list covers which services are in.
Is all of Texas 8.25% sales tax?
No. Texas charges 6.25% statewide, and cities, counties, transit authorities and special districts can add up to 2% more, so 8.25% is the ceiling. On the Comptroller's city list, 1,121 of 2,516 rows sit at 8.25%; others run 6.75%, 7.25%, 7.75% or 8%, and the lowest city total on the list is 6.5% (Douglassville in Cass County).
Plano sales tax vs Frisco, Allen and Dallas
Around Plano the cap is the norm. Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Richardson, Murphy, Prosper, Carrollton and Dallas all total 8.25% on the Comptroller's list. The mix differs: Frisco, Allen and McKinney keep the full 2% for the city, Murphy and Prosper split theirs with local development, crime control or fire districts, and Carrollton and Dallas pay 1% to DART like Plano. For a shopper there's no difference: you pay 8.25% wherever you buy in the area.
Plano sales tax on a year of spending
Say your household spends $20,000 a year on taxable goods. At Plano's 8.25% that's $1,650 in sales tax. In a Texas town with no local tax, at the 6.25% state rate, it would be $1,250. The $400 gap is the most sales tax can move your budget anywhere in Texas, and against Frisco, Allen or Dallas the gap is zero.
Highest sales tax in Texas
At 8.25%, Plano is tied with hundreds of Texas cities at the legal ceiling, so the sales tax line in your budget is the same anywhere in the Dallas suburbs. The tax that does differ is property tax: about $6,476 a year on a typical Plano homestead, nearly four times the $1,650 sales tax on $20,000 of spending. The unit-by-unit breakdown is in the Plano property tax rate by taxing unit.
Texas has no state income tax
Texas doesn't tax wages, salaries or investment income, so the state return you filed where you lived before goes away. If your old state had an income tax, that's the change to put a number on first. It's also locked in: since voters approved Proposition 4 on November 5, 2019, Article VIII, Section 24-a of the Texas Constitution bars a tax on individuals' net income, and undoing it would take two-thirds of each house plus a statewide vote.
What no income tax means for a Plano move
Your federal income tax doesn't change. Take last year's state income tax from your old return: that's what you stop paying, and it's the figure to set against Plano's property tax, about $6,476 a year on a typical homestead. Run both through the Plano cost of living breakdown before you compare salaries.
Moving to Texas mid-year and your old state's income tax
The year you move, your old state may still tax the income you earned while you lived there, and some states have rules for income that keeps coming from them. Ask a CPA in your old state about a part-year resident return.
Vehicle sales tax and the $90 new resident tax
Cars have their own tax, separate from the 8.25% retail sales tax. The state's motor vehicle tax is 6.25%, with no city or transit add-on, and it's paid to the county tax assessor-collector, which in Plano is Collin County's (or Denton County's for the far west).
| Situation | Texas motor vehicle tax |
|---|---|
| Buying a car in Texas | 6.25% of the price, less any trade-in |
| Bringing a car you already own and registered elsewhere | $90 new resident tax |
| Even exchange of vehicles | $5 |
| Vehicle received as a gift | $10 |
| Private-party used car | 6.25% of the price or the standard presumptive value |
Vehicle sales tax on a car bought in Plano
Buy a $40,000 car from a Plano dealer and the motor vehicle tax is $2,500. Trade in a car worth $10,000 and you pay 6.25% on the $30,000 difference: $1,875. The dealer collects it at the sale and sends it to the county tax office, so it shows on your buyer's order rather than as a separate bill. Note that it's 6.25%, not the 8.25% you'd pay on a TV in the same city.
Texas new resident vehicle tax
If the car was registered in your name in another state or country, you pay $90 instead of the 6.25% tax when you title it in Texas. Vehicles brought into Texas owe the tax within 30 days. Pay late and the Comptroller adds 5% for 1 to 30 days and 10% after that. Titling and registration steps are on the Texas car registration guide.
Buying a car out of state as a Texas resident
Once you live in Plano, a car bought in another state still owes the 6.25% Texas tax, less credit for sales tax you paid to the other state. The $90 rate is only for a car already registered in your name before you moved: buy after you arrive and the full tax applies, $2,500 on a $40,000 car.

- The year you move: ask a CPA in your old state about a part-year return.
- The January 1 after you buy: file the homestead exemption by April 30, worth about $2,000 a year on a typical Plano home.
- Every month: budget 8.25% on taxable purchases and the property tax through your mortgage escrow.
